Pros and cons of both Joint Family as well as Nuclear Family.
We are all branches of trees attached together to a tree by its roots. Roots signifies family. In one's life family is the most essential part. From childhood we were taught to be together, and from the beginning of our schooling we were taught about the importance of family. Living in a family creates a sense of respect for every person in the family and living togetherly transforms a house into a home.
Families are basically of two types -
Joint family
Nuclear family
Joint family is a family when more people of a family remain together in a single home. Joint family includes grandparents, parents, uncle-aunts, cousins togetherly. For decades India has followed the joint family system. But with time the new trend of splitting- nuclear family has been adopted by many.
Census report of 2001 says that-out of 100, 51.7% of households were nuclear households.
In urban areas the rate has increased on rapid growth. While in rural areas the percentage of nuclear families from 50.7% to 52.1%
Across India the rate of joint families decreased substantially from 19.1% to 16.1% .
While in rural areas the decrease is much more i.e. from 16.5% to 14.6%.
According to a survey conducted in the capital of India- Delhi, shows that 40% of elder people have not been taken care of by their families. This led to increasing crime rates for senior citizens. To feel protected , they spend their days in old age homes. The Delhi police departments are making more arrangements for the stay of senior citizens for their safety.
From the ages , father is the head of the joint family who lives with his wife, parents , kids and other members of the family. The responsibility of taking care of family is not of a single individual but all the members of the family.
Joint families are decreasing day by day .The major reason behind this is, lack of opportunities and increase in towns and cities. People have started to leave their families to stay in cities to grab job opportunities.
Bringing the entire family to the city is really difficult. Joint families hardly survive in cities. Because the cost of living in cities is very high where only a single person earns as compared to that of in rural areas.
Many disputes arrive after the marriage of kids, as in some cases it becomes thought for mother and daughter in law to stay together in one home. This leads to separation of families and their love. The grandparents become lonely and the grandkids get devoid of their love and care.

Kids of Nuclear families lack the love and care offered by their grandparents.
They have less ethical and cultural values as compared to the kids of joint families.
Children follow what they have seen. Once they get their job security they leave their parents and settle far.
Conclusion-
Joint family systems have been followed in India for several decades and are decreasing day by day. This decrease in the joint family system is due to rapid increase in the rate of urbanisation. This is eventually increasing the nuclear family systems in India.
Both joint families and Nuclear families have their own advantages and disadvantages. It is the choice of people and the need of the time to opt whether to be a part of a joint family or to leave in and start a nuclear family. Both will give you different experiences. Family, whether it is joint or a lot , gives peace to a person. Family is important and both nuclear and joint families should be equally respected.Because it's a person's own opinion where they need to stand.
