The term used for successfully maintaining and allocating time between work and other aspects of life like family, friends etc. This is a pretty recent term as for it origins traces back to being used in US and UK around the year 1970s to 1980s.Your best individual work-life balance will vary over time, often on a daily basis. The right balance for you today will probably be different for you tomorrow. The right balance for you when you are single will be different when you marry, or if you have children; when you start a new career versus when you are nearing retirement.
There is no perfect, one-size fits all, balance you should be striving for. The best work-life balance is different for each of us because we all have different priorities and different lives. Gender differences could lead to a work-life imbalance due to the distinct perception of role identity. It has been demonstrated that men prioritize their work duties over their family duties to provide financial support for their families, whereas women prioritize their family life this creates a straightforward bifurcation based on the whole “work life balance” difference for women and men in particular.
One of the predominant negative consequence of the work life conflict is stress, anxiety and other relaxed issues. Problems caused by stress have become a major concern to both employers and employees. Symptoms of stress are manifested both physiologically and psychologically. Persistent stress can result in cardiovascular disease, sexual problems, a weaker immune system and frequent headaches, stiff muscles, or backache. It can also result in poor coping skills, irritability, jumpiness, insecurity, exhaustion, and difficulty concentrating. Stress may also perpetuate or lead to binge eating, smoking and alcohol consumption.
Achievement and enjoyment are the two sides of the same coin. In order to be truly successful and satisfied in life, you’ll need to pay attention to every aspect of your life. Give the same emphasis to each one of them and you’ll realise how much better your life turns out to be.
