Acing the CAT exam: Do’s and don’ts

Do you know that zero marks in the CAT exam is equal to 55 percentile that means almost 55 percent of the total aspirants got zero or negative marks. Please note that is primarily because they believed they won’t be able to make it to the IIMs since the first day of their preparations and that’s what happened. The mindset can make all the difference in a person’s life in every field. If you believe you can do it then you can certainly achieve anything you want in life.

It’s not like every candidate who made it through the exam brilliantly and aced the interviews was an all-around topper throughout his/her life. It’s the attitude that they had that they are going to make it no matter what comes in their way. They had their goals set and everyday they made efforts to reach it. They believed that they are going to make it happen to them. They came out of their mental block and any negative thoughts.

The real fight is amongst the top 50,000 to 60,000 candidates and to get at least 1 IIM call you’ll need to be in the top 10,000-11,000. In order to do that you need to have to have a good knowledge about your strength and weaknesses whether your strengths area is quant or verbal so that you can polish your strengths and work on your weaknesses. If you can get around 34-35 questions right, it would get you a score of 95 percentile according to the previous years’ data.

Join a coaching institution if it is possible and feasible for you, it will give a constructive and structures thought process. Coaching may be required for people who cannot concentrate for long or who have an obvious shortcomings in certain subjects, e.g. lots of students from Arts background may be out of touch with Math – in this case they should opt for coaching. Building your GK is another very important aspect of your preparation major part of the candidates don’t put much emphasis on this and end up screwing the exam.

The best way to figure out your weak areas is to analyse the performance reports for your mock tests. Indulging in mock tests is the best thing an aspirant can do. You do that half the battle is already won. Give lots of mock tests, analyse them properly, figure out areas you are weak in, study those areas, repeat. Don’t lose hope if you are not doing well. It could be that what is wrong is your strategy in attempting questions, or maybe you are not doing well in certain core sections. Believe that you will get into a good IIM, and you will.
