WHICH IS BEST, ONLINE OR OFFLINE EXAMS?

The global pandemic forced everyone to adjust to a new way of learning and life. Several organizations, including schools and universities, were forced to close as a result of the national lockdowns. In today's world, online exams are the standard. Things moved from offline to online, because of this from offline to online became a new norm.

ONLINE EXAM

Advantages of online exam:

  • In most circumstances, online tests produce immediate results. Online exams have revolutionised the evaluation process by making it more accessible, simple, and straightforward. The computer system handles the verifying for the teachers. The marking of the papers is generally done automatically when the evaluation is completed.

  • Scalability: Online tests can accommodate a larger number of pupils. This makes it easy for colleges and universities to plan their examination schedules.

  • Online tests have been suggested to be more cost-effective. Exams conducted online use minimal paper and other materials. This lowers stress levels and saves time. Teachers profit from online exams and they save time from having to prepare stacks of exam sheets. Students can save money by not having to pay for transportation, and other expenses that are not necessary for their own family.

Disadvantages of online exam:

  • Online tests are held on online platforms, thus there is need to be connected to the internet. Therefore, student needs an internet connection. A robust and consistent internet connection is costly, which limits students' ability to take online tests. Thousands of individuals around the world still consider the internet to be a privilege.

  • Problems with the method of response: Not every student who takes an online exam is a fast typer. The student's overall performance would suffer as a result. As a result, subjective answers are not very well to online assessments. Objective responses are the greatest option because they don't need quite so much typing.

  • Security in Online Tests: The question of security is a hot topic of discussion. How well can online tests ensure that all students receive fair and equal testing?

  • Many technological challenges arise when taking online exams. Students may lack the necessary technology and devices to participate in online lessons and tests. There are challenges with internet connectivity among the technical issues. Even though students have all of the necessary gear, they will be unable to participate in online classes or tests if they do not have access to the internet. The online exam style exacerbates these issues.

OFFLINE EXAM

Advantages of offline exam:

  • Accessibility: Whereas the expense of administering exams is significant, most students can afford to take exams offline. Offline tests are more practical because pupils only require a paper and pen for the examination.

  • Interaction between students and teachers: Having an instructor look over the student during an offline exam is quite beneficial. Throughout the epidemic, many teachers were unable to receive responses from students in their online classrooms.

  • Offline exams have few to no technical challenges, as opposed to online exams. It's advantageous for pupils since they can write without fear of technical difficulties obstructing their work.

Disadvantages of offline exam:

  • Offline examinations have a large financial expense, which is the major difficulty with them. A significant amount of money is invested in the exam format for offline exams to perform well. Aside from that, the setup takes a lot of effort.

  • Evaluation procedure takes a long time. Teachers spend a significant amount of time creating questions and reviewing each answer sheet. It takes a long time to assemble the question papers and answer sheets.

  • The entire procedure of offline exams takes a significant amount of time. Students and professors waste time going and completing all of the processes for offline exams.

Both the offline and online exam alternatives have advantages and disadvantages. However, technology has surely opened up new avenues for education to reach a wider audience. Overall, the online learning system has ensured that education is maintained in a time when it is desperately needed.
