Without having a proper knowledge on topics, one cannot crack GD very easily. Here, this article is to provide you some details on the GD topic, “Gender Inequality in the Workplace”.

Topic: Gender Inequality in the Workplaces

Overall theme

  • Gender inequality is one of the common things seen in Indian Working atmosphere.

  • Women are the main victims of this.

Disproportion of number in workplaces

  • There are no legal barriers for women in any jobs in India. The only place where it was seen in Defence forces, which is also changing now days.

  • Constitution prohibits gender based inequality in workplaces, which is also a fundamental right in India.

  • Women prefer people oriented jobs (nursing, teaching, services) and men prefer things oriented (machines, construction, factory works) usually based on their biological nature of preferences.

  • The cultural and social aspects of India create a disproportion of men and women in the workplaces.  Conservative mindsets keep women away from certain jobs, which turn them as male centric ones.

  • Gender activists argue for 1:1 ration in every job.

  • This 1: 1 argument will lead to Equality in opportunity vs. that in Outcome, which is considered as an impossible one.

  • Even though opportunities are provided equally, cultural, social and biological variations will make disproportion of numbers in the workplaces. (example- Scandivian countries, with gender equality is ideal than with us)

Gender equality in childbirth and parenting

  • Main influencing matter is childbirth and parenting

  • Child birth forces women to take maternity leave for at least two months, in almost all jobs.

  • Usually Indian culture forced women to take care of the children, which made them to resign from job after the birth of a baby.

  • Now a day the society also accepts paternity leaves, and understands father’s responsibilities in parenting.

  • Many companies also offer paternity leave and allowances for fathers also, to take care on the child along with the mothers.

Malpractices towards women

  • No law supports malpractices against women in workplaces, in India.

  • The misbehaving approaches towards women are a drawback of our social and cultural negatives, which consider women as secondary people in the society.

  • Judiciary and constitution of India offer full support for women, who come before, after facing such issues at their workplaces.

Other remarks (conclusion)

  • Gender inequality is very less in Indian workplaces, now days.

  • Discriminating women or others on gender basis is illegal and punishable, according to Indian Constitution.

  • However, some jobs may face gender disparities in number, just because of the social and cultural mindsets of the Indian Society.
