 GD preparation- National Education Policy 2020: key points

  • Approved in July 2020, by the Union cabinet

  • Aims to modify education system of the country, by 2040. 

  • It demands approval of all states, since education comes under concurrent list.

  • Education and attention from very early ages- this policy includes Anganwadis and pr-schools to the education system, which will provide education from very early ages itself.

  • Rebuilding education system – the policy will make necessary modifications to the education system, which will fit it with the modern world.

  • Supplement of breakfast for all- the old policy give lunch for all students, from the school itself. This policy will also provide breakfast, filed with health items along with lunch for all students. 

  • Multi disciplinary graduation- the NEP 2020 will give chances to learn many subjects, within the four year graduation period, which will in turn make the students fit to acquire a career. 

  • Merging of vocational subjects with mainstream – usually vocational subjects is not added with academic subjects, in India. This policy will link both of them together, which will help to improve the skills of the students. Also this will boost up economy of India, since the skilled laborers will be produced more in number.

  • Accelerating intellectual and emotional skills – the NEP 2020 will also teach the children the skills of leadership, teamwork, effective communication and emotional concepts like empathy, perseverance etc.

  • Digital learning- the NEP 2020 will make the students more creative and innovative. The policy also emphasize the digital learning, along with teaching other concepts like social issues, fundamental duties etc. This policy will ensure digital literacy in the country, which is very essential in this modern world.

  • Extension of Right to Education to 18 years, from 14 years- earlier RTE was for 6-14 years. Now it is up to 18 years, according to the NEP 2020.

  • Boosting the Online learning platforms- the NEP 2020 give care for Online Distance Learning and Massive Open Online Learning methods, which will increase the access of learning platforms by all people. This will also help for students from remote areas, to study any course they wish without any geographical barriers. 

  • Modifying assessment system – the NEP 2020 will modify the system of assessment of students, which will be improved based on the needs of modern world. Also, this will make the system more student friendly, by decreasing the burden by giving emphasis to quality over quantity.

  • Improving the quality and delivery of teaching experts – the NEP will reduce the transferring of teachers which happen frequently in the old system. This will in turn increase the relationship of students and teachers. Also through various developmental programs, the quality of teaching experts will also be accelerated. This will in turn take to the progress of the education system. Along with this, dedicated and innovative teachers will get recognized, which will attract the people to select this profession. 


  • Integrated degree courses- the NEP 2020 will provide various integrated degree course, which will increase the skills and knowledge of the students. Also, this policy will provide opportunity to drop the course, after two or three year, along with getting the diploma certificate. 

  • Multi disciplinary courses- the NEP merges almost all courses each other, which will make the students possessed with multiple subjects, within the three or four year of education itself. 

  • Opening the colleges globally- the NEP also provide the chances to open various Indian Universities to the global world, which will increase the international student strength in India. 

  • Assistance to students in financial matters- the policy also provides various financial aids to poor students, through scholarships and other methods. This will help the economically backward people to pursue higher education. 

  • High quality research studies- the NEP also give care on researches, by trying to improve its quality. The policy puts and idea of National Research Foundation (NRF), to coordinate the research in all Indian educational institutions under one single platform. This NRF will work to improve the assistance and finance for carrying out the researches in the country.

Critiques of the policy

  • Employment opportunities after education in NEP 2020, especially after online distance education

  • Impact of central education committees on states role in higher education- NEP gives more importance to central authorities on the education system. Since it come under concurrent list, the roe of states should also be addressed

  • Less opportunities of employment in the market- the COVID pandemic has cut down the employment chances in the world, almost in all fields. So the chances for getting jobs by NEP will also face such challenges. 

  • Language medium of education- the policy makes usage of local languages for teaching compulsory till 5th standard. This will in turn lead to ignore English language, which is considered as one of the working languages in India. Also, the usage of local languages will make the migrants within the country to face language issues in education. 

  • Digital services are not proper all over the country- in order to implement the policy in the full action, internet facilities and digital facilities must be ensured to reach in every minute parts of the country. 

  • Lack of expertise in teaching- there are many vast differences in the required number of teachers and available ones in the country. Without having enough teaching experts, the policy cannot be implemented properly.
