OF MBBS
MBBS in
English means Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. In Latin, it means
Medicinae Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgiae. But, the latest combined Latin
and English version gives us Medicinae Baccalaureus and Bachelor of Surgery and
hence, we have MBBS. This is a degree awarded to students on completion of
their graduation from a medical school. Different countries award the students
with different degrees for the same. For example, traditionally, colleges in
China awarded the students with Bachelor of Medicine (BMED). One thing that can
be easily agreed upon is that a student who has graduated from a medical school
or college is awarded with a MBBS or an equivalent of it (some countries refer
to MBBS as MD, Doctor of Medicine).

PURSUE MBBS
There are a
number of ways through which a student can get admission in the MBBS course.
But, a necessary condition to be able to practice in India now is the NEET for
MBBS. An MBBS course in India is of five years. India has always placed huge
emphasis on education and this hold true for the MBBS course as well. Medical
Council of India has clearly defined and strict guidelines about the curriculum
to be followed in the MBBS course. The institutes which fail to stick to these
guidelines for MBBS course are often at the receiving end of Medical Council of
India’s ire, which include de-recognition as well.
Another way
for pursuing an MBBS course is studying abroad. Every year lakhs of students
appear for the NEET exam. Although they are able to qualify the NEET exam but
miss the target of taking admission in a good college in India. So, the next
best option for them is to take admission in one of the foreign countries as
per their reference in a good MBBS college. There are a number of countries
that offer MBBS course similar to what is offered in India, some examples are
Nepal and Bangladesh.
SUBJECTS IN MBBS
The students
get to study a number of subjects during their MBBS course. In the first year
of MBBS, there are 3 subjects, Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry. In the
second year of MBBS, there is pathology, microbiology, Pharmacology and
Forensic medicine. After that, for two more years of MBBS, there are clinical
subjects that consist of Preventive and Social Medicine, Ophthalmology and ENT
in third year. In final year, the students study Medicine, Surgery (including
orthopedics), Pediatrics and Gynecology & Obstetrics. Then, the student has
to do a compulsory internship of one year at the end of MBBS course. Almost a
similar pattern holds for students who aspire to study in foreign countries,
though the number of years may differ.
Career options after MBBS

a specialization to carry on n with their majors and practising medicine.

year the students spend in internships, they can work either at
hospitals or
in health care centers taking up roles of consultants, physicians and other
medical assistants. They can also get involved with the government and return
to the society, as a doctor, your knowledge and conduct public awareness
conferences on topics like diseases, medicines, health and fitness, etc. This will
give you a good exposure and a sneak peek of what is to unfold.
After
successful completion of the medical internship, the students will be entitled
to the term doctors and can register with the Medical Council of India (MCI).
The next decision depends on whether you wish to work in the health field as
doctors or pursue higher education in medical fields and go for MD/MS. Even if
you wish to go with the latter, you can still be research associates and work
with the pharmaceuticals. In addition to this, the students may also take
Combined Medical Services Examination, which helps them get employed at central
government organisations, like hospitals, defence sector, railways, and with
the local/state government.
