Tamil Nadu Cabinet okays 10 percent NEET quota for government school students

This was never thought before. Horizontal reservations means reservation within each segment. So this would apply within all categories of students.

Tamil Nadu Cabinet okays 10 percent NEET quota for government school students

From this academic year itself, 10 percent of NEET quota will be given for government school students. An ordinance will be promulgated regarding the above in a few days. The state Cabinet Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami gave is approval on Monday regarding the same. A report was filled a few years ago by Justice P Kalaiyarasan for this.

It was seen that the number of government school students joining medical courses came down after the implementation of NEET. Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on March 21 told the state assembly about the situation. state government considered the enactment of legislation to provide reservation for students who take the exam.
The reservation will be provided to students how to pass the NEET examination and studied in
1. government school till 12th
2. schools run by municipal corporations and municipalities
3. schools run by Adi Dravida
4. Tribal Welfare Department
5. Kallar Reclamation Schools and
6. Forest Department schools

The people of Tamil Nadu and the state government didn’t want the NEET examination to take place. Former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa succeed in exempting this from Tamil Nadu. The central government introduced the NEET examination for all medical courses entrance from the year 2016-2017.

Will it stand the scrutiny of law?

Former judge of Madras High Court Justice K Chandru said that for the reservation to pass the government will need strong support and this decision may not stand the legal scrutiny even though the intention is to help the underprivileged student.

Adding on he said the court may not accept the proposal as there is no strong reason to support this. All government schools are allowed to have an English medium so language can not be the barrier and if the location is the concern than rural areas also have small matriculation schools.

Lack of level-playing ground

While welcoming the approval, Prince Gajendrababu, general secretary, State Platform for Common School System said the only reason to support this is private school students belong to a higher economic group so they can afford private tutions while government school students can get a medical seat only if the score extremely high they can not afford to pay any private institution.

On January 13, 2017, the state assembly passed a bill against NEET and forwarded it to the central government. A case has been filed before the Supreme Court against NEET the case been handled by senior lawyers. The case questions “how it would affect the students of Tamil Nadu hailing from rural areas “.
