FORM OF M.B.B.S
For more info,
The English acronym for M.B.B.S is ‘Bachelor ofmedicine and Bachelor of Surgery’. But the short form was originally coined
from the Latin name i.e. Medicinae Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgiae. Lately,
the English and the Latin version have combined to form Medicinae
Baccalaureus and Bachelor of Surgery, thereby giving us MBBS.
MBBS is a bachelor degree program awarded in Medicine
and Surgery upon completion of a five-year graduation from a medical college.
Although, the name of the degree varies worldwide. For instance, traditionally,
colleges in China awarded students with Bachelor of Medicine (BMED).
One thing that is certain that a student having been
completed the five-year course from any medical college is entitled to M.B.B.S
degree (or as termed in the respective country from where one completes the
course)
HOW TO PURSUE MBBS
Talking about India the eligibility criteria for a
student to opt for medical degree is that he/she should have passed 10+2 with
science stream (biology + physics + chemistry).
As of today, qualifying NEET (an all India central
level entrance exam for medical) has become mandatory to seek enrollment in
Medical colleges throughout the country. Also, there are several University
level entrance examinations such as AIMS, JIPMER etc., that offer limited seats
and similar education). India has always emphasized on quality education and
the focus remains the same in MBBS degree as well. An MBBS course in India is
of five years. Medical council of India (MCI) has laid strict guidelines
regarding the curriculum to be followed in the MBBS course. The institutes that
fail to stick to these guidelines often have to suffer consequences. These
consequences in the worst-case scenario might also lead to de-recognition of
the institute as well.
Despite having several medical colleges and numerous
seats, many students are unable to qualify the entrance examination and even if
they do so, they lack the opportunity to grab good government colleges. In such
case, the next best alternative is to weigh the chances of pursuing MBBS from
foreign institutes. Many countries (like Nepal and Bangladesh) offer a similar
course of MBBS as in India.
SUBJECTS IN MBBS
Right from the physics, chemistry and biology lab, s
student suddenly enters a different world of Dissection Hall (DH). Overall,
there are 19
subjects during the whole 5-year tenure that a student
comes across.
Subjects:
In the first year of MBBS, there are three subjects
i.e.
·
Anatomy
·
Physiology
·
Biochemistry.
In the second year there is: -
·
Pathology
·
Pharmacology
·
Forensic medicine.
The next two years comprise of clinical subjects i.e.
·
Preventive and Social Medicine,
·
Ophthalmology and ENT in the third
year.
In final year, the student study
·
Medicine
·
Surgery (including orthopedics)
·
Pediatrics
·
Gynecology & Obstetrics.
Then comes a compulsory internship in the final year
of MBBS course.
During the internship period pursued in the final year
of MBBS, students can either work in a hospital or health care centers. They
can also organize public awareness campaign regarding diseases, medicines,
health and fitness. This provides a good exposure opportunity and also is
helpful in gaining practical aspects regarding what is there more to unfold.
Almost a similar pattern holds for students who aspire
to study in foreign countries, though the number of years may vary depending
upon the country.
CAREER OPTIONS AFTER MBBS.
Throughout the five years of MBBS the students tend to
develop and know about their interests and further specialize in their selected
subjects to continue with their majors or practice in medicine.
Nephrology, Cardiology, Gynecology, Anesthesiology,
Organ Transplant, Endocrine, and General Surgery, etc. are a few of the career specializations
for MBBS students.
After successful completion of the medical internship,
the students will be entitled to the term doctors and can register with the
Medical Council of India (MCI). The next decision depends solely on the student
as to whether he/she wishes to start practicing immediately as a Doctor or
pursue higher education in medical fields and go for MD/MS. Even if one wishes
to go with the latter, he/she can still be a research associate and work with
the pharmaceuticals. In addition to this, the students may also take Combined
Medical Services Examination, which helps them get employed at central
government organizations, like hospitals, defense sector, railways, and with
the local/state government.
