Car Ownership: Is it necessary?

People have always held the mindset that their lives are incomplete without owning their own set of  wheels. Automobile companies further made it easier for the middle classes to upgrade from bikes to four wheelers by launching budget-friendly cars like Nano, Brio and other hatchbacks. Owning a car is considered a necessity as well as a status symbol by an overwhelming amount of Indians.

What people fail to realise is that there are plenty of other options than actually owning a car like Ola and Uber. They are much more economical, pocket friendly as well environment friendly. With their business flourishing and more and more people resorting to it, owning a car will soon be a thing of the past. They are a much more convenient and better alternative to car ownership as you don't have to worry about insurance, servicing, low resale value and the soaring high prices of petrol and diesel. Just one click on your mobile phones and you’re good to go. In cities like Delhi and Mumbai these taxi services have become a necessity with millennials turning to them to save money as well as do their part to save their city from the increasing levels of pollution day by day. Infact the air pollution levels in Delhi have increased so much due to fuel emission from cars that it has drastically increased patients suffering from asthma and other lung infections

Considering the cost and benefits of owning a car, it is certainly a depreciating asset. Driving your own car for pleasure is indubitably beyond economics. But it’s really important to have a larger view of every single aspect before concluding which option is better in terms of an individual as well as the nation.
