What’s wrong with the education system of India?

India is widely popular for the amazing sets of doctors, engineers and business leaders that it has provided to the world to the extent that these talented people in their respective fields have almost become a brand in famous countries like USA, UK etc. This vast list consists of names like Sundar Pichai, Deepak Chopra, Satya Nadella, Indira Nooyi and the list continues.

Surely India has given rise to some amazing names in numerous fields still, in a country with a whooping population of 132 crores and counting, our education system has some major potholes. The fact that rote memorization, leading to behaviour which encourages cramming and forgetting rather than life long learning. Our education system stands on the pillars of cramming and memorising that tends to create a bifurcation amongst the students in terms of those who cram and those who understand, and almost always it’s the students with the cramming nature who earn better marks and improve their propositions for the future while the latter ones have to struggle. Aptitude isn’t given much preference in comparison to standardised testing.

Apart from that, there’s an extreme pressure from the society, parents and peers to do the further studies in the medicine and engineering even if it’s their field of interest or not and it’s not only the society at blame for this, these are the only two professions in our country which provides financial security, the others are risky “YOU MIGHT DO VERY WELL, YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE THE TWO ENDS, IT’S A SLIPPERY SLOPE” . So going for the safer side almost 70% of the students go for it even if they’re interested in it or not. This overload creates an immense competition for the seats in the universities and this cut throat competition along with the reservation system makes it near impossible for innumerable talented students to get into their choice of college. SSC marks are of the utmost importance, if you don’t perform well in that, you’re doomed for life and ‘won’t have a stable future’.

The worst thing about basic India’s education system, apart from what is already mentioned is, giving too much power to teachers, and teachers wise enough to misuse it properly. This is what came along with the CCE pattern in which teachers had all the right to evaluate and mark their students in accordance with their own personal preferences. The irony is that they teach students to be disciplined, calm, non-violent, punctual etc, but when it comes to them, they prove to be brutal themselves. They physically and mentally abuse children who don't follow them blindly.

Just when a student completes his/her schooling they enter college where the things are a bit more difficult, the class schedules are haphazard, there’s no concrete way of doing things, attendance becomes the most important thing, student’s academic abilities are judged on the basis of how many pages he filled in the exam, the more the better their score’s going to be.

The system creates a lot of dichotomy amongst the students. This process makes a lot of talented students to be left out, it resembles a lot to lottery. To be able to incorporate a larger no. of students in different fields we’d need to create more high paying jobs in every field along with increasing the seats in colleges.

Thanks
