Burari Kaand: What lead to these superstitions?

Just a few days ago, the nation was shocked by the news of a ‘mass suicide’ in the Burari region of Delhi. Although the autopsy confirms death of at least 6 people by hanging, the notes found in the house tells a different story "which point towards observance of some definite spiritual/mystical practices by the whole family”.

These notes which had details about how the hands and legs are to be tied were quite similar to the way the bodies of 10 persons were found. One of the officers pointed out that the notes talk about how one can attain salvation and how the human body is temporary but the soul always continues to live on. The notes say if a group of 11 people follows these rituals, all problems would ease out and they would attain salvation.

So the big question is why did this family which had at least one-third well-educated family members fall in this trap of occultism. One of the possibilities is that the elder members of the family could have compelled the younger ones to take this step towards salvation with them. It has been reported that it has been a few months since the family members started writing these notes. The last entry in the diary was just two days old. Also, the notes appear to be extracts from some kind of Tantrik literature, according to a Times of India report. These evidences are emphasising predominantly on their supernatural beliefs and practices.

Superstition in India has always been a widespread problem. It is usually attributed to a lack of education.But, in India educated people have also been observed following beliefs that may be considered superstitious and it often combined with the idea of religion or faith when in reality, it has nothing to do with it. No dark force can help you reach heaven. One of the reasons that superstition and witchcraft is still legal in India is to benefit the godmen who have political connections. Politicians patronising godmen serves to sanction superstitions of the general public. In the past 200 years, India has lost various precious lives in their blind belief of black crafts from Sati to witch-hunting, the list is endless. Moreover, taking in account the person scenario we don't see much improvement in the coming years as well.
